Coccrete:
Bio-Band-Aid
for Buildings
Material Biodesign
Elements: Algae + Hydrogel
11.2022 - cont.
Responsible for 8% of all global emissions and producing 2.8 billion tonnes of emissions per year, concrete’s ecological impacts outweigh its short 20 year lifespan.
Shifting from a mindset of rebuilding and repair to that of recovery, Coccrete has been developed as a hydrogel band aid for building healing. Using naturally occuring calcifying algae Coccolithophores, the hydrogel band-aid provides an ideal microclimate for algae to grow, calcify and sediment within cracks across degraded concrete, increasing the structural integrity and lifespan of the building. This project and material exploration is currently in continued development.
